Coaching and healthy churches    6/2006

Dear Dawn Associates,

The Dawn Vision for North America is for 4,000,000 new churches.  (What a crazy goal!) But just planting a lot of churches is not enough.  Our goal is that they would be healthy churchesTransformational churches.  Churches where Isaiah 61 is occurring in the church and then naturally overflowing into the surrounding neighborhood.  Vibrant families of Jesus within easy reach of every person in North America.

Ultimately only God can produce a healthy church.  However, we think that one of the most powerful ways we can join Him is through the ministry of "coaching".  Coaching is a gift we give to another person that helps them hear the Spirit for themselves.  Coaching is a "fierce conversation" in which we are fully present for another through asking thoughtful questions and careful listening.  (Some call this "redemptive listening".)

Because of our commitment to planting healthy, vibrant churches, coaching is a key value of the Dawn Strategy. Our goal is that every Dawn Associate is both coaching and being coached.  In fact, we ultimately want to develop 4,000 coaching networks throughout North America so that every house church leader would have a coach available to them if they desire it. (Note:  in many cases, "peer coaching" will be most practical.  That is, two people take turns coaching each other.)  Towards this end, we want to tell coaching stories, share coaching resources and, ultimately, see coaching conferences throughout the Continent.

Coaching resources:  See the Resource section of this site for a helpful "how to" on coaching from Steve Addison in Australia.  In terms of books we recommend Leadership Coaching by Tony Stoltzfus and a secular book called Fierce Conversations by Susan Scott.
